The journey starts here
Opening a school - what to consider?

Building a school from the ground up brings a unique set of challenges. From governance and leadership to policy and culture, each layer requires thoughtful planning. This blog offers links to guidance based on my experience working with school owners.

Leadership
A clear leadership structure builds trust, ensures accountability, and empowers those at the helm to lead effectively.
A critical early step is defining leadership roles and establishing oversight. A clear organisational chart helps ensure strong communication and accountability. The role of the Head of School should be carefully shaped—not only to lead academic programmes (such as IB coordinators) but also to guide the school’s broader strategic direction. School owners often seek transparency in areas like finance and admissions, but it’s vital to balance this with giving the Head of School space to manage daily operations. Open conversations help set boundaries that serve both educational and business goals.
Leadership success must be measurable—clear KPIs support accountability while fostering professional growth.
Success in leadership should also be measurable. Setting thoughtful KPIs in collaboration with the Head supports growth and accountability.
Additionally, a well-defined Advisory Board—especially valuable when the owner lacks educational expertise—can act as a trusted strategic partner, offering guidance, challenge, and support.
Culture
Culture is the invisible architecture of a school—it shapes how people behave, make decisions, and solve problems.
School culture underpins everything. It shapes behaviour, decision-making, and community identity. Strong cultures aren’t just aspirational—they are embedded in daily practice. Policies such as staff codes of conduct and the five mandated IB policies should be actively lived and regularly revisited. Leaders should continually ask: are these values known, reflected in behaviour, and helping guide decisions?
"Cultural sensitivity isn't optional—local norms and expectations profoundly shape hiring practices and parent ngagement.
Beyond leadership and culture, school owners must consider other essential elements: a compelling vision and mission, meaningful market research, a sustainable financial plan, and facilities aligned with the educational philosophy. Hiring qualified educators and supporting their development is crucial—but so is being sensitive to the local cultural context, which can influence hiring norms, staff expectations, and how parents engage with the school. Misalignment here can impact both community trust and school operations.
You're not just building a school—you’re creating a legacy where students, staff, and community can thrive together.
Ultimately, establishing a school is about more than buildings and policies. It’s about cultivating a thriving ecosystem—where students grow, staff feel empowered, and the community flourishes. I have learnt how important it is for all to feel a strong sense of belonging in the school - a place where they are proud of working, and glad to come everyday. With the right guidance and tools, school owners can create something enduring.
