What are the ATL?
What are the approaches to teaching and learning?
This opening session introduces teachers to the Approaches to Teaching and Learning (AT). For some teachers this could provide a challenge to move from a traditional subject-focused style of teaching to a skills-based, process-oriented style aimed at promoting self-regulation by students.
Depending on the experience of your staff it might be a good idea to ask teachers to identify questions / inquiries / concerns they have about IB ATL. This will allow them to connect with theme of the workshop and establish some of their expectations.
Introducing the approaches to teaching and learning
Coordinator Notes
The PPT below provides the introduction. However, prior to showing each of the slides about the approaches to teaching and then the approaches to learning ask them to use a Jigsaw a document or book protocol to read the IB document Approaches to teaching and learning in the Diploma Programme.
You will see that I have suggested that the jigsaw activity to explore the approaches to teaching asks them to use the paragraph, sentence, phrase, word protocol, whilst the activity used to explore the approaches to learning uses the Visual Metaphor strategy.
