Conflict: Falklands/Malvinas

The Falklands/Malvinas War of 1982 was a short but significant conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over sovereignty of the Malvinas / Falkland Islands. The war began on 2 April 1982, when Argentine forces invaded the islands, which had been under British control since 1833. Britain responded by sending a large naval task force to retake the territory. After intense fighting on land, at sea and in the air, Argentine forces surrendered on 14 June 1982. The war had lasting political, social and economic consequences for both countries and continues to influence Anglo-Argentine relations and the sovereignty dispute today.
