2. Japanese expansion: events 1931 to 1939

Japanese expansion in the 1930s began with the invasion of Manchuria by its Kwantung army in September 1931. It escalated into a full scale war with China in July 1937 and culminated in the attack on the US base at Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Japan withdrew from the League of Nations after it was condemned for its actions in Manchuria and the government shifted diplomatic alignment towards the fascist powers in Europe....
