In 1990 the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) invaded Rwanda and a brutal civil war raged until a fragile peace deal was reached in the Arusha Accords in August 1993. However, Habyarimana"s government faced opposition to the agreement from Hutu Power extremists.In April 1994, Habyarimana and the Burundian president, Cyprien Ntaryamira were on a flight to Kigali when it was shot down by a missile as it prepared to land.
