Example 2: Kenyan independence (1945-1978)

Kenyan independence came about following a guerrilla insurgency against British rule which ended up being one of the British Army's bloodiest post-war conflicts. Although the rising was defeated, many Kenyans still regard it as a significant step on their country's road to independence.

However the first leader of an independent Kenya was Jomo Kenyatta who had played no part in the actual rising but was seen by Kenyans as the key figure in the nationalist movement.
