Example 1: The Haitian revolution (c1780-1811)

The Haitian revolution is the only known slave uprising in history that led to the founding of a state which was both free from slavery and ruled by non-whites and former captives. This successful and complicated campaign for freedom and equality, begun in 1791, and involved the rebels fighting and defeating the French, British and Spanish. It was influenced by the French Revolution of 1789, which would come to represent a new concept of human rights, universal citizenship, and participation in government.
