Conflict: Second World War: Europe

Years of international tension and aggressive expansion by Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany culminated in the German invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939. The ensuring war lasted until 1945; it involved the Axis powers (Germany, Italy) fighting the Allies (UK, USSR, USA, France). The result was devastating for Europe; it resulted in massive destruction, genocide and the mass displacement of millions of people.

The Second world war is an example of an interstate, total and world war.
