6. Taiwan and the Republic of China

With the defeat of Japan in 1945, the Republic of China (ROC), took over Taiwan. When the GMD was defeated by the CCP in 1949, Jiang and his government fled the mainland to the island claiming that the ROC, now on Taiwan, represented the legitimate government of China. However, Jiang had to use force to establish the position of the ROC, and relied on the US to help resist attacks from the People"s Republic of China...
