Cuba under Castro

Castro led a successful revolution in Cuba in 1959, overthrowing the pro-USA dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. He then ruled for nearly five decades transforming Cuba politically, economically and socially. His alliance with the USSR, and his announcement that he was a Leninist Marxist in 1961 ensured the enmity of the USA, and the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 saw Castro at the centre of the most dramatic Cold War crisis.
