1.2 Independence and Identity

This focused study covers two dramatic and bloody rebellions which had profound consequences:

  • The tumultuous events in Haiti, 1780–1825 in which enslaved people fought and defeated the French, Spanish, and British to end slavery and establish an independent Republic
  • The fight for independence against British rule in Kenya which was one of the most significant steps towards a Kenya free from British rule.

Example 1: The Haitian revolution (c1780-1811)

The Haitian revolution is the only known slave uprising in history that led to the founding of a state which was both free from slavery and ruled by non-whites and former captives.

Example 2: Kenyan independence (1945-1978)

Kenyan independence came about following a guerrilla insurgency against British rule which ended up being one of the British Army's bloodiest post-war conflicts.
