The Civil Rights movement in the United States

The civil rights movement was a popular movement in the United States which started in the mid 1950s and which aimed to abolish legalized racial segregation, discrimination, and disenfranchisement.

Slavery had been abolished in the United States in 1865 and then African Americans were granted basic civil rights through the passage of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. However these rights were largely ignored in the Southern states, and battles to secure federal protection of these rights continued during the next century. It would only be as a result of the civil rights movement starting in the mid 1950s that segregation in the south would be officially ended through key legislation in 1964 and 1965.
