Example 1: Post-war displacement in Europe (1945–1960)

Between 1945 and 1960, Europe experienced one of the largest population displacements in modern history. The devastation caused by combat operations and Allied victory displaced millions, especially in Central and Eastern Europe.

Many fled or were expelled due to ethnic cleansing, persecution, or fear of reprisals. Economic collapse, hunger, and destitution further drove people from their homes. In response, national governments and international agencies, including the UN, coordinated efforts to manage and assist displaced persons. Camps were established across Europe. The experiences of displaced people varied significantly, from Jewish Holocaust survivors, stateless people whose countries of origin no longer existing or refused their return to former prisoners of war and those who had served in German-allied forces.
