Unit 3.3 - Costs and revenues
Learning outcomes
Costs and revenues are at the heart of all businesses, irrespective of their vision or goals, and irrespective of their legal status (even not-for-profit social enterprises and non-governmental organizations need to ensure there are regular revenue streams and that they control their costs).
This section of the IB Business Management syllabus is common to SL and HL students, covering an understanding of the following learning outcomes:
- The following types of cost, using examples (AO2):
fixed
variable
direct
indirect (overhead)
- Total revenue and revenue streams, using examples (AO2)
Note to teachers:
Although this Unit is only taught to AO2, please note that calculations (AO4) are required when teaching Unit 5.5 (Break-even analysis).
For HL only students, also note that the calculation of costs and revenues is required for BMT 14 - Contribution (and more specifically, make or buy decisions, i.e., the cost to make (CTM) versus the cost to buy (CTB).

The only amendment to this section of the new syllabus (first exams 2024) is the following:
Semi-variable costs (AO2) as a type of cost has been removed from the new syllabus.
Please be aware of this change if/when using resources for the previous syllabus, such as past IB exam papers and mark schemes.
