Learning outcomes

In this unit of the IB Business Management syllabus, students learn about various aspects and roles of leadership and management. Students also learn about the differences between the meaning of leadership and management, including various leadership styles.

As with all units, the key concepts are applicable to this section of the syllabus, such as how ethics and creativity play a role in leadership styles. Similarly, components of the Business Management Toolkit (such as Hofstede's cultural dimensions) are applicable to this part of the syllabus.

The three learning outcomes (or assessment objectives) for this section of the IB Business Management syllabus are:

  • Scientific and intuitive thinking/management (HL only) (AO2)

  • Management and leadership (AO2)

  • The following leadership styles (AO3): (i) autocratic, (ii) paternalistic, (iii) democratic, (iv) laissez-faire, and (v) situational.

Note to teachers

Please note the following changes to the new syllabus (first exams M24).

  • The key functions of management (AO2) in the former syllabus has been removed in the new guide.

  • Management versus leadership (AO2) has been renamed as Management and leadership (AO2).

  • Scientific and intuitive thinking/management (HL only) (AO2) has been added to the beginning of this section of the syllabus.

  • As the CUEGIS concepts are no longer featured in the new guide, the following learning outcome has been removed: How ethical considerations and cultural differences may influence leadership and management styles in an organization (AO3).

Please be aware of the above changes when/if using resources for the previous syllabus (final exams N23) such as past IB exam papers and mark schemes.
