The new Extended Essay

In February 2025, the IB released a new Extended Essay (EE) guide for first teaching in 2025 and assessment in 2027, with an updated version of the guide being published in May 2025.
The EE remains a core Diploma Programme component, focused on developing students’ independent research and writing skills under teacher supervision.
The revised guide is aimed directly at students to emphasise independent inquiry. Students may choose any topic from one or two DP subjects, with a clear and focused research question that must be addressed.
Hachette Learning (formerly Hodder Education) hosted a free webinar about the new Extended Essay on 12th February 2025. The event saw a record for the most sign-ups for any webinar hosted by Hachette Learning, with almost 1000 registered participants!
You can find a recording of the webinar in the YouTube video here.
Following the webinar, Hachette Learning published several blogs to support teachers with the new EE guide. I am pleased to let you know that all blog posts for the new EE are now live on the publisher’s website. These have been authored by my co-author Joseph Koszary, who is the EE Coordinator at Sha Tin College, English Schools Foundation (ESF) in Hong Kong.
Happy reading!
