Internal Assessment requirements
The following table summarizes the nature of the work for IA that is required for DP Business Management:
Subject and level | Nature of work | Format of work |
Business Management SL | A written commentary (maximum 1,500 words) based on 3 - 5 supporting documents about a real issue or problem facing a particular organization | Written commentary |
Business Management HL | A research project comprising a research proposal (maximum 500 words), executive summary (200 words), and a written report maximum 2,000 words), which addresses an issue facing an organization or analyses a decision to be made by an organization (or several organizations) | Research project |
Responsibilities of teachers
Most schools use IBIS to enter their internally assessed marks for the IA (some schools use Managebac). Once you have entered the IA marks for all candidate, IBIS will generate a sample for electronic upload for external moderation purposes. For instructions, see the section below.
Where there is more than one teacher at your school responsible for marking the IAs, please ensure your marks are awarded subject to an internal standardization process.
For May 2023, we are back to sampling. Centres are required to submit a sample of the assessed work for moderation.
For the sample, teachers are encouraged to provide written comments to indicate how marks have been awarded – these comments can be very helpful to the moderators:
“Centres that showed with comments why the marks had been awarded for each criterion helped the work of the moderators significantly, as they could understand the reasoning behind each mark allocation.” (M20 Subject Report, page 16)
You can download the template for the SL IA here, and for the HL IA use the link here.
The official deadline for submitting all eCourswork and Internal Assessment to the IB is 20th April. However, you need to check with your DP Coordinator about internal school deadlines for electronic uploaded of the IA.
The selection of sample work
Centres are required to submit a sample of the assessed work for external moderation.
To enter candidates’ IA marks on IBIS, go to Subject > IAPG > Mark entry > IA mark entry.
After each candidate's marks have been entered and verified, select “Complete mark entry”. You need to enter the IA marks for all candidates in the M23 cohort.
IBIS will then select the sample and enable you to enter the criteria marks for the sample candidates.
After the criteria marks have been submitted for the sample candidates, DP coordinators (or a designated member of staff at the school) will be required to upload the work for external moderation.
The size of the sample will vary according to the number of candidates entered by the school for that subject and level (see table below).
Number of candidates | Sample size |
5 or fewer | All candidates |
6–20 | 5 candidates |
21–40 | 8 candidates |
41 or more | 10 candidates |
Please also note the following need to be uploaded to IBIS, as per the instructions in the document "2023 Subject component upload requirements":
Subject and level | Upload requirements | File type | Uploaded by | Number of files |
Business Management SL | Written commentary Supporting documents Criteria marks and teacher marking comments | Document Document Document | School or candidate | 3 mandatory |
Business Management HL | Research project Criteria marks and teacher marking comments | Document Document | School or candidate | 2 mandatory |

In the case of any irregular situation, you must speak with your DPC directly for the necessary instruction. Examples of irregular situations include, but are not limited to:
Academic malpractice
Additional assistance given by a teacher

Transfer candidates

All the best with the uploads!
