November 2022 Updates and Notices

November 2022 Updates and Notices

Dear all

It's already November! I hope the exams for students in November centres went well (Papers 1 and 2 were actually scheduled in late October).

The InThinking Business Management community continues to grow, with 1,648 registered teachers and 14,473 students now using the website across 111 countries. Here is a summary of some of the updates added to the website over the past month.

A glossary of key terms for the new syllabus has been added at the end of each unit, with a total of over 750 key terms (definitions). Students must spend adequate time learning and reviewing these key terms in preparation for the IA and external assessments.

True or False quizzes have been added for the vast majority of units on the website for the new course. Most of these consist of 20 T/F questions to test your students' understanding of the subject content covered in the new course. In total, there are about 740 true or false questions. These can be found on the homepage of each unit of the syllabus on the website.

The new course includes plenty of quantitative techniques, with additional ones for SL students (such as decision trees in the Business Management Toolkit). There is now a comprehensive list of all the quantitative techniques in the new guide here. To support students, additional exam practice questions have been added, such as this one for decision trees which can be found here.

For Unit 2.5 (Types of organizational culture) a new quiz based on Charles Handy's Gods of Management (HL only) has been added here.

In Unit 3.7, Insolvency versus bankruptcy is a new addition to the course for HL only students. A new true or false quiz has been created to test your students' understanding of the differences between insolvency and bankruptcy. The quiz and other resources for this topic can be found here.

For Unit 4.5, a new starter/plenary activity has been added here for the topic of branding - how many of these anagrams of famous brands do your students know? If you need to update your classroom display, then this activity might help - it is called the Dead Brands Graveyard, based on the topic of the Product Life Cycle in Unit 4.5, which can be found here.

A new exam practice question (Karen Wang Wedding Dresses) has been added to Unit 5.6 (Production planning for HL only students) here. This comes with a full mark scheme for teachers. In addition, a new worksheet with exam practice questions for capacity utilization has been included here.

Teachers are encouraged to embed the new key concepts in their teaching of the new course. An example has been shared here in ATL Activity 3 (What's In A Name?), which can be used to link the key concept of change with content covered in Unit 4.5, such as aspects of branding (AO2) and the importance of branding (AO2).

Looking forward to next month, a full sample Paper 3 plus mark scheme will be added to the website, based on the social enterprise Change Please. There will also be samples of the new Paper 2 exams with full mark schemes. This will provide additional support to teachers and students preparing for first examinations in 2024.

Details of two Think-Ins (InThinking professional development opportunities) in November for the new Business Management Toolkit (BMT) can be found here. We will go through all 15 of the tools, with resources provided for each of these to support you in delivering this new component of the course.

The above link also includes details on an IB-approved Category 2 Workshop in February 2023, which will focus on all aspects of the new syllabus (first exams 2024). I will be leading this IB virtual workshop, hosted by InThinking in cooperation with the IB. Full details can also be found on the IB website here.

Wishing you and your students all the best for the month ahead.
