May 2022 updates and notices

May 2022 updates and notices

Dear subscribers

It's already May, which means the May 2022 exams have started, with the Business Management exams already over(!)

Therefore, over the next few months, the updates on InThinking Business Management will be almost exclusively for the new Business Management syllabus (first teaching 2022). Some of the updates already on the website for the course are outlined below:

  • There have been lots of questions about the new business management toolkit (BMT) - What is it? Will it be assessed in the exams? How is it used in the internal assessment? How do we best integrate the BMT into our teaching and learning? These questions, plus more, have been addressed in the dedicated section on the new BMT here.

  • Further updates have been added to the new BMT section of the website, including an exam practice question on Gantt charts here and this new "Cut and Paste" activity for STEEPLE analysis here.

  • Suggested areas for the integration of the BMT in teaching the contents of the syllabus have been included for each tool - scroll down to the bottom of the page for each tool to see these suggestions from the BMT homepage.

  • Find out more about the new internal assessment here.

  • The section on the new key concepts (creativity, ethics, sustainability, and change) has been uploaded to the website. There are suggestions at the end of each section to show how you can integrate each of the four key concepts in your unit plans and curriculum plans. Visit the homepage for the key concepts here. Feel free to have a go at this ethical dilemma question as a starter activity that you can use with your current students too (as part of ethics in the CUEGIS framework).

  • A list of twenty IA research questions that fit the requirements of the new IA has been uploaded, consisting of 5 IA research questions for each of the new key concepts.

  • Read about the new Paper 1 assessment here, which will be based on a pre-released statement (rather than the current model of a pre-released case study). There will be top tips added to show you how best to prepare students for this new assessment.

  • Find out about the new Paper 2 exam here and how students can use the ATES framework to answer the 10-mark extended response (essay) question.

  • Find out more about the new Paper 3 (HL only) here. The new syllabus places a large emphasis on social enterprises, so it will pay dividends to plan ahead, especially in getting upskilled for the new 17-mark essay(!) Find out more here.

To further support teachers, we hosted our first of five InThinking upskilling events for the new Business Management course (first teaching July/August 2022). Many thanks for the 23 participants who attended this. We have four more upskilling workshops lined up on the 4th, 12th, 19th and 24th May 2022 - registration details can be found here if interested.

Please note that the upskilling workshop on 19th May starts at a later time in order to cater for colleagues based in the Americas region (although teachers from all regions are welcome).

The workshop on 24th May focuses exclusively on the new Business Management Toolkit (BMT).

For the current DP1 cohort of students, some of the updates include the following:

  • A new "Large vs Small quiz" has been added to Unit 1.6 here.

  • Real-world case studies and examples to consolidate understanding of having a unique selling point has been added here. This can be useful for the CUEGIS essays, especially with reference to innovation and strategy.

  • A new vocab quiz has been created to help students with Unit 4.2 here. There is also a user-friendly version that you can also download as a worksheet for use in class.

  • For N22 candidates and DP1 students who are about to face internal (mock) exams, I've added a fun starter activity to demonstrate a key exam skill, courtesy of "BAD application by Michael Jackson" (scroll down to Top tip 4b here).

InThinking Business Management continues to grow, for which I am grateful for your continued support and feedback. At the time of writing, we have 1,334 teachers and 11,948 students across 101 countries using the website. Content on the website now exceeds 740,000 words (that's more than 185 Extended Essays!)

Please allow me to take this opportunity to wish your M22 students the very best for the remainder of their exams.

With best wishes

Paul Hoang
