A Biology Data book in 2028 !

Th IB have just released a Biology Data book and an updated DP Biology Guide.

No need to panic! The IB reassure us that only minor changes have been made to the guide, and most of these changes are additions of references to the data booklet. No content has been added or removed.

Both the Biology Data booklet, and the new edition of the Biology Guide  can be found of the Programme Resource Centre (PRC)  the updated Biology guide (first assessment 2028).

The changes in brief

  • Explicit references to the data booklet (about 50 of these in total).
  • Better clarity about the expected depth of coverage for some points of syllabus content.
  • Clear identification of mandatory examples, e.g, “include this example”.
  • Clear mention of optional, illustrative examples, e.g. “such as ….. ”.

I think this is a welcome step, and unusual to do in the middle of the live of a new guide.  Teachers have often spoken about the need to know more precisely how much detail is needed in some of the syllabus points, so that they don't spend too much time on any one topic. There is already a lot of content to fit into teaching lessons.

These changes aim to reinforce the emphasis on conceptual understanding and analytical thinking.
