C1.1 Enzymes & metabolism - written task
This structured extension question is in the style of an IB exam question.
It has a focus on the concept of enzymes and metabolic pathways.

Several enzymes often catalyse a sequence of reactions in metabolic pathways as shown in the diagram above.
For each statement below:
- State whether it is true or false,
- Explain why - with reference to the role of enzymes in metabolic reactions and pathways.
Total 20 marks (2 marks each)
Enzymes bind with substrates at a specific point on the structure of the enzyme.
Teachers note - this topic embeds the idea of enzyme function in their role in metabolic pathways. Explain requires an explanation.
The substrate fits in the active site of the enzyme with no change to either substrate or enzyme conformation.
A change of pH away from the optimum pH will slow the reaction between the enzyme and the substrate.
An increase in temperature causes more collisions between substances in solution.
