C2.2 Neural signalling - written task

This structured extension question is in the style of the IB exam questions.

It has a particular focus on the structure of synapses and the role of vesicles and membrane proteins in the transmission of nerve impulses.

Synapses are functional connections in the nervous system.

The diagram shows four components of a synapse.

1. Identify the components A to D and give the function of each. (8 marks)

10 lines

Teacher note - only chemical synapses are required in SL.

2. Describe the direction of diffusion of neurotransmitter across the synapse. (1 mark)

2 lines

3. List three features of a synapse that prevent the signal from travelling in the reverse direction. (3 marks)
