Assessment - introduction

Assessment is an essential part of teaching and learning in the DP Biology course.  This page lists the different types of resources which teachers and their students can use to check learning.

Intro to assessment

  • Formative assessment

    In Biology this can take many forms, students doing their work in the lab will show teachers their knowledge, understanding and abilities in skills by;

    • Manipulating lab equipment in an experiment.
    • SOLO hexagons, or other classwork designed to show whether students have understood.
    • Answering a question orally.
    • Asking for help or further explanation.
    • Keeping a clear note of what they have learned, completing a worksheet, etc.
    • Completing a specific task set by the teacher.
    • Responding to marking / feedback.
  • Summative assessment

In Biology this is usually a written test, or an experiment write-up.

    • Topic test (to assess understanding of a single topic)
    • Multiple topic test (this is useful in developing long term memory, and preparing for exams)
    • End of year exam

Formative assessment materials

  • Activity work
Learning activities for use in lessons,
  • Written tasks
Useful homework or classwork tasks. Students write an answer to a paper 2 style extended response question on a specific topic.
  • Exam practice
A set of key words or concepts is presented in a table and as a set of flashcards for students to study. Then three short structured questions can be attempted using the key words and concepts for support. Students can submit a document or a photo to the teacher's mark book as proof that they did the task..
  • 5 Essentials revision
A printable sheet of five, or sometimes slightly more, essential concepts to study, like detailed flashcards, with useful phrases to use in exams.
  • Reading tasks
Something to read, and then a short multiple choice quiz which is automatically graded. These can be set as a task and students submit their quiz mark as proof that they did the work.
  • Quick quizzes
These are just for revision sets of multiple choice questions from a question bank on the site.

These formative assessments are all in the student access area because students need to be able to access these pages if they are set as a task for the class.
