Gene mutation can be caused by chemical mutagens and by radiation. Errors in DNA replication or in the proteins which control repair of DNA can malfunction. This leads to mutations which become a new allele, or a gene that has no functional protein. No natural mechanism is known for making a deliberate change to a DNA base for changing a gene or trait.
