Topic tests for 2025 exams

Summative Assessment for the 2025 exams

At InThinking Biology our aim is to help teachers to deliver the new Biology guide for first exams in 2025.

These topic tests help to measure how well our teaching has helped the student to learn the biological concepts.
Parents and students will want this feedback too.

This section of the site contains short topic tests designed and written by experienced teachers for the new topics.  The questions are designed to have the same style as IB exam questions.

From experience we know that simple factual recall is often not enough to answer IB diploma questions as they try to promote the use of higher order skills.

The design of the IB-style Topic tests

Each of the topic tests has a consistent design so teachers can use them with confidence.
    Concise
They are short, taking about 30 minutes for a student to complete, less time consuming to mark helping teachers give timely feedback.
    Versatile
The short length enables teachers to combine two topics into a longer summative assessment if they wish. In this case students will still be able to complete the 'double assessment' in a one hour lesson.
    Inclusive
Students who normally receive extra time can do the same test as other students in a single class without the extra burden of having to come back later to finish their test.

    IB Style content

All the tests use styles of questions that will be found in the final exams.
    They contain the following sections:

    • Multiple choice questions - each with 4 answer choices- A, B, C or D and only one correct answer.

    • A few shorter, structured answer questions.

    • An extended response question worth between 4 and 7 marks.

    • An additional HL question or two for all the topics which have additional higher level content.

    Model answers

It's most use for those students who haven't achieved a high mark to see what a good answer would look like. The InThinking topic test all have a set of model answers. These will be written like correct student answers answers and they will also have extra suggestions to cover a large range of options.

It's hard to include every correct option in these model answers but it's perfectly right for teachers to judge the correctness of any other answers which students give. Sometimes the best students can find correct ways to respond that teachers haven't imagined.
