May 2026 Paper 2: Sample Response 1 (Q2)

This week, we are posting our first May 2026 Paper 2 model example on the site.  This is also the first essay we are publishing under the “new” criteria for Paper 2.  The IB has added criterion B2 from May 2026 and beyond.  It’s titled “comparative analysis” in the Language and Literature Guide and the criterion specifically focuses on how the student “analyzes similarities and/or difference between the two works studied” (50).

This is a great exemplar to use in your class to set the tone for this assessment.  Students need to write a lot!  They should have precise evidence.  It doesn’t always have to be direct quotations, but it does need to be specific.  Have students discuss what makes a novel different from a play (if applicable to you in your situation) using terminology appropriate to the literary form.  And show your students how much comparing and/or contrasting has to happen to be successful on this assessment.

Best,

Tim and David
