Language and the individual

One of the suggested topics in the Language A: Language and Literature guide is 'language and the individual'. For this topic we are concerned with how an individual identity is constructed through language. Besides the human desire to belong to a community, exists the desire to be a unique individual.

You can think of this image of these shoes as a kind of metaphor for understanding how language sets one apart from the rest. We will explore several texts, from poems to ads, to see how people use language to express their uniqueness.

  2. How do people use one or more languages in various contexts to express their individual identity?

  3. How do individuals define themselves according to the practices of a community?
