May 2025 Paper 1: Sample Response 3 (Digital Divide)
This week, we are publishing our 3rd exemplar from the May 2025 Paper 1 examination based on an infographic from the Good Things Foundation, a charity focused on “fixing the digital divide – for good” in the UK. Infographics are a very popular text type and this exam should have not come as a surprise to students. The guiding question was also typical of past IB exams: How do image and text work together to promote digital engagement?
This model example addresses the guiding question well. The paragraphs focus on both the words and the images and how they work together to promote digital engagement. There's an understanding of not only the divide that is presented in the infographic, but also how the author constructs this divide and why.
Is there room for improvement? Of course. The close-language analysis isn't yet precise enough nor is the overall interpretation nuanced enough to attain top marks. Still, getting many of our students to this level is a huge success and this model example will help many of your students write even better. You may also want to pair this model example with one that scores higher (found here) or one that scores lower (found here) depending on your circumstances.
