May 2025 Paper 1: Sample Response 2 (Digital Divide)

This is the second response we are publishing from the May 2025 exam based on an infographic from the Good Things Foundation, a charity focused on “fixing the digital divide – for good” in the UK.

The guiding question was also typical of past IB exams: How do image and text work together to promote digital engagement?

As for this model example, it is a pretty standard response.  It is adequate in most regards.  You may find that comparing and contrasting it to the first model example we published to be a useful classroom activity.  By showing students was “adequate” or “satisfactory” looks like (this exemplar) versus “good” or “very good” understanding, interpretation, and analysis of the writer's choices (the first exemplar), students will begin to see what they need to do to take their writing to the next level.

Finally, have students pay attention to the conclusion.  It ends with an interesting thought about the digital divide and the irony present in posting an infographic online trying to get people to be more tech savvy.  Most conclusions end up being too repetitive.  This one, however, provides a worthwhile final idea to the reader.

Best,

Tim and David
