May 2025 Paper 1: Sample Response 2 (Real Estate)
This week, we are publishing another sample response from the May 2025 Paper 1 examination. It is based on an advertisement selling a renovated apartment in Perth, Australia. Found on the website realestate.com.au, the listing (advert) by Bourkes, a real estate company, presents a luxury apartment for sale.
The guiding question was: How and to what effect are persuasive elements used in this text and why?
We highly recommend you use this exemplar with our first model example found here. Why? Comparing and contrasting responses that get high marks with responses that get standard marks helps students literally see the difference between an overall IB 5 versus an overall IB 7.
By comparing and contrasting, you also area able to lean into what quality or top-notch analysis looks like; what sustained interpretation means; and how to help students develop their arguments.
If, however, you do not want to do this, this model example still is great to use in the classroom! It offers you opportunities to support students to reach this level of writing (by framing sentences analytically and by focusing on the author and their choices) if they are not yet there. It also allows you a chance to show students how to stretch analysis that has not been fully unpacked.
