The Awakening: Before Reading

Thursday 21 November 2024

This week, we are introducing materials for teaching and studying Kate Chopin’s short novel, The Awakening (1899). In the coming weeks we will present more materials – more materials than we anticipate you will ever need – for the study of Chopin’s work. Controversial at the time of its first publication, you will need to determine if the work and our materials are appropriate to your own context. While some regard The Awakening a novel, others refer to it as a novella. For convenience and utility, we have simply settled on referring to as a short novel. Regarding it as such means that the novel can be regarded as one work in the IB’s system of classification, and it is absolutely not problematic to regard the novel as a work for the purposes of assessment tasks including Paper 2, the Individual Oral, and the Higher Level Essay.  We hope that you and your students enjoy the study of the work and enjoy engaging with our materials.
