How does a student use evidence and examples, but not direct quotations in a Paper 2?  The May 2023 Paper 2: Sample Response 5 shows students how to do just that! 

This particular response doesn’t have any direct quotations in the essay!  And yet, it’s still good.  How?  There is enough detail given in the examples to support their claims that show they know their respective literary works. 

That doesn’t mean the response couldn’t benefit from more precision.  It could.  But this exemplar does show students how to use examples and evidence – but not direct quotations – to succeed in this assessment. 

You may also want to compare and contrast this essay with the May 2023 Paper 2: Sample Response 4.  Both write about the same question.  And both use Death and the Maiden in their response as one of the two works they are comparing and contrasting.     

Finally, as with all of our resources and materials, use this exemplar in your classroom how you see fit to help you meet the needs of your students in your particular context.
