May 2023 Paper 2: Sample Response 1 (Question 3)

Thursday 19 October 2023

Last week, we published a Paper 1 from the May 2023 exams.  This week, we are starting to publish Paper 2 exemplars from the May 2023 exams as well.

You can find the model response (exemplar) here.

Of course, May 2023 was the first iteration of Paper 2 for the revamped English A: Language and Literature course.  The assessment task requires a heavy focus on comparing and contrasting.  This is both in the ideas or concepts (think content of the literary works) and in the ways in which that content is revealed (think techniques or broader authorial choices).

It’s a tough assessment!

Because it can be a hard assessment for students to conceptualize, we've also published another page in conjunction with the model response.  You can find it here.  The goal of that page is to help students answer this question: How do I compare and contrast both the content and the authorial choices in relation to the question?  It breaks down the exemplar and then asks students to fill out their own graphic organizer in relation to the same question, using two literary works they have studied.

We've also re-housed the 11 Paper 2 exemplars we already have on the site under the heading "Pre-2023 Paper 2s."  If you are looking for those samples - and they are still great to use with students! - you will find them there.

Finally, over time, we will continue to add more exemplars from the May 2023 Paper 1 and Paper 2 exams.  We know you want exemplars from us and we will deliver!

Best,

Tim
