April 2024 Updates and Notices

Dear InThinking subscribers

It's already April 2024! That means the Internal Assessment for your first cohort will need to be uploaded very soon (if not already) and the first set of IB exams for the new syllabus are only a few weeks away!

It has been an extremely busy month at InThinking. Please see below for some of the updates to the website.

  • Additional top tips for the supporting documents in the new Internal Assessment are posted here.

  • For BMT 13 Critical Path Analysis, additional exam practice questions have been added here.

  • For BMT 14 Contribution, a new MCQ quiz has been added here. There are 20 multiple choice questions in total, with a brief explanation of the answers, to support students' understanding of this challenging topic.

  • Recently uploaded to the InThinking site are three sample scripts for the iBakery Paper 3 case study. These scripts have been marked by approx. 70 workshop participants, including several trained Paper 3 examiners. The scripts can be accessed here. I hope you find these useful to use with your students. (scroll down to the bottom of the page to access the hyperlinks to the sample scripts and feedback comments).

  • Five new Paper 2 (Section B) exam questions and mark schemes have been added to the Paper 2 page on the website here. The following topics are covered in these new exam practice questions:

  • 11 - Juke’s Retro Arcade Games (partnerships, labour turnover, payback period, ARR, NPV, and investment appraisal decisions).

  • 12 - Thames Valley Winery (Stock control charts - reordering quantity, reorder level, lead time, and buffer stock level - costs of stockpiling, and just-in-case stock control system).

  • 13 - Tesla (Profit margin, economies of scale, labour productivity rate, Ansoff's matrix, and market leadership).

  • 14 - Mount Beacon School (Autocratic leader, line management, external recruitment, and leadership styles).

  • 15 - Cash crisis at London Zoo (Capital expenditure, fixed costs, source of finance, and STEEPLE analysis).

  • An addition Paper 2 (Section A) question and mark scheme has been added here. The case study (Brisbane General Builders) covers the following topics: direct costs, outsourcing, critical path analysis, and float times.

  • A fifth Paper 3 exam plus mark scheme has been added to the website (Tony's Chocolonely) and just in time to provide students with an additional sample paper prior to first ever Paper 3 exam next month. The resource can be accessed here.

  • Another set of top tips for the new Paper 3 (HL only) extended response question (worth 17 marks) have been shared here. Many thanks to Bradley Deren, Kim Forbes, and Dr. Farhat Husain for working to get this latest Paper 3 resource on InThinking. Both Kim and Bradley teach at Dubai American Academy in the United Arab Emirates, and Dr. Farhat teaches at International School of London in Qatar.

  • The Exams FAQ section of the site has also been updated here.

Whilst Business Management candidates are not provided with a formulae booklet, one has finally been created on InThinking to support students with the quantitative techniques in the course. There are over 100 quantitative techniques in the course, most of which have a formula that does not appear in the official formula sheet issued to candidates in the Paper 2 exam. Many thanks to Neissa Gallahar (who teaches at Aspalathos Medunarodna Skola in Croatia) and Bradley Deren (again) for their support and feedback in getting this resource on the website. The comprehensive formulae booklet can be accessed here.

Finally, as most students and teachers in the IB World are focusing on the first set of exams for the new syllabus later this month, the glossary of key terms for the course has been updated. At over 18,000 words covering more than 700 key terms from the syllabus, this is (probably) the most comprehensive glossary available for the new course. Please direct your students to this page so support their revision.

Wishing you and your students the very best with the upcoming examinations!
