- How to unpack the SL Visual Stimulus

Once you have selected the visual stimulus that you want to discuss for the Individual Oral, you will need to unpack it. SL students will have 15 minutes to write 10 brief working notes. This page will help guide you with tools to unpack the visual stimulus.

The Visual Stimulus
You will have 15 minutes to unpack the visual stimulus and then speak about it for 3-4 minutes to your teacher. This will be be you score for criteria B1 in the individual oral rubric. If done well, you should be able to earn all 6 points on the rubric.
To score well, you will need to:
- briefly describe what you see in the image
- relate the visual stimulus to the relevant theme from the course - for example if the image is labeled as Experiences, then you should be able to say why and how the image connects to this theme
- make clear links to the target culture(s). In our case, state why and how this image connects to the Anglophone world. You can say, I think this image was taken in Australia because…
- express your opinions on the ideas implied in the visual stimulus. You can say something like, “This image reminds me of” or “I like this image because…”
Remember, what you say doesn't need to be factually correct. If the image was taken in Australia, but you state that it is Canada, you won't lose points. The idea is that there needs to be a connection made between the image and the Anglophone world with a justification for your statement. Ideally, you can make a connection to a unit you studied in your class.
Below is a brief unpacking guide using the See, Think, Wonder model from Project Zero's Visible Thinking Routines.
