This enshrines the idea of "intellectual property" - that if you have thought up a new idea, or written a book or a song, you have a right to profit from that original creation: it is "yours". Patents assert the idea that someone who comes up with a creative new idea deserves to be rewarded. In short, human ingenuity is valuable.
