Identity and independence ... how do you define what a "nation" is? And can a "nation" be a real "nation" without being independent? Or is a "nation" an imagined reality which exists whether or not the group is an independent entity or not? All of these questions were in the air during the referendum about Scottish independence in 2014 - and lurk behind any referendum of that "national independence" variety.
