It is surely good practice in the English B classroom to have lots of engaged, collaborative discussion, providing oral practice and intellectual development ... agreed? But does this always work as well or as effectively as we hope? Perhaps not ... agreed? The issue is that it is unwise - OK, perhaps just plain wrong - to assume that our students naturally and spontaneously know how to handle discussion efficiently....
