In June 2020, in Bristol, the statue of a 17C businessman called Edward Colston was pulled down and thrown into the river. Why?Because Colston had made most of his very large fortune from the slave trade. When he died, he bequeathed his wealth to the city of Bristol, which funded charities such as hospitals and schools. The city commemorated his generosity by naming a range of streets and public buildings after him.
