We read news reports in order to know what"s going on. Everyone will agree with this ... but everyone will surely also agree that news reports are inherently a selection of what is really going. This is inevitable since any news report is restricted by the space and time available for the report, to say nothing of the fact that reports are written by individual human beings with necessarily restricted viewpoints.
