July 2023 Updates and Notices
Dear InThinking subscribers,
It’s already July and many of you will already be on your summer vacations. However, the InThinking team will continue to update the website weekly, especially for colleagues teaching in November centres and those who wish to continue accesing the website to plan ahead for the new academic year.
At the time of writing, we have 1,890 registered teachers across 112 countries using InThinking Business Management. A few weeks ago, we welcomed Suzhou High School of Jiangsu Province to the InThinking DP Business Management community. The school is likely to be the oldest school to offer DP Business Management. Suzhou High School of Jiangsu Province was established almost 1,000 years ago, back in 1035, but became an IB World School in November 2022.
There have been plenty of updates and additions to the website during the past month. Some of the highlights include the following:
A new exam practice question for Unit 1.2 has been added here. It is based on a recent report published by Statista (29 June 2023) about the global cooperatives market. This is a useful resource to also help students prepare for the new Paper 3 assessment, which focuses on social enterprises.
A new exam practice question for Unit 4.6 (HL only), based on BMW, has been added here. It is based on a marketing mishap of BMW whilst operating in international markets.
A new exam practice question for Unit 5.8 (HL only), focusing on IPP / IPR can be found here. It is based on a recent case study about Twitter being sued by the US National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) for copyright infringements.
In light of the rapid developments with artificial intelligence (AI) - and ChatGPT in particular - a new ATL Activity has been added to Unit 5.9. The activity can be accessed here. This should prompt some good discussions and you might even want to invite your school leaders into the classroom to hear the students' presentations for this task.
A growing bank of resources is being added to the InThinking Business Management website. Some recent additions include the following resources that will support teachers and students working on the new Internal Assessment:
A detailed IA planning project resource has been created in collaboration with Rowena Gregson. This resource will help students to plan their business research project, with consideration of contemporary issue or problem facing an organization of their choice along with some preliminary research into the key concepts and supporting documents. The IA planning project task culminates in a research proposal presentation which will support students prior to them starting to actually write their IA. Rowena teaches at Canberra Grammar School, Australia. Many thanks, Rowena! The resource can be accessed here.
On a similar note, a step-by-step IA Guide has been created by Roberto Jones who teaches at The American School Foundation in Mexico City, Mexico. The detailed 7 step-by-step guide will support students with their IA from start to finish. Many thanks for sharing this with the InThinking community, Roberto! The guide can be accessed here.
A new poster has been created for the Internal Assessment (first exams 2024), which can be accessed here. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Tahmidul Haq Ansari who has collaborated with InThinking to create this poster. Tahmid teaches in Bangladesh where he is the IB DP Coordinator aa well as the Extended Essay Coordinator. Many thanks for sharing your creativity and expertise with us, Tahmid!
A couple of weeks ago, there was much discussion about the meaning of the contemporary nature of the new IA. Clarifications on this matter, based on updates from the IB, have been posted in the blog here.
Tahmid has also create a new poster for the HL external assessments here. These posters are definitely worth sharing with your students.
A new Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about the new external exams has been added here, including updated rules for the use of calculators in the new exams.
A full set of Assessment for Learning (AFL) tasks for the entirety of the new syllabus, including for the 15 components of the BMT, have been added to the website here. Assessment for learning (AFL) refers to any task that is used to assess a student’s comprehension and understanding of a particular topic or skill during the learning process. It provides teachers with ongoing feedback about their students' learning. Many thanks to Pamela Ng for working with me to develop these AFL tasks that align with the new syllabus (first exams 2024). Pam is Middle Division Coordinator at ACS (International) in Singapore.
And finally, all the very best to teachers and students in May centres as you await the IB DP examination results later this week! Further details about the release of exam results can be found on the IB website here.
