ESS from 2024 Headlines

In this page we preview what we know will be coming in the new ESS course from August 2024. This is information available in the curriculum review documents and presentations at the global conferences. The full course guide will be released in February 2024 and for which we are preparing our site to be ready.

Concept Led

There will be three core concepts which form the Foundation Topics. These are Perspectives, Systems and Sustainability. The aim is to teach the foundation topics at the start of the course as they infuse the rest of the course.

SL and the new HL course

Each of the topics includes additional HL level material then there are three HL lenses. These are separate topics that can be used to infuse the other topics. These lenses are Environmental Law, Environmental Economics and Environmental Ethics.

Emphasis on Skills

The designated number of hours for practical activities has been raised from 30 hours to 50 hours. This includes 10 hours for the Internal Assessment and 10 hours for the new Collaborative Sciences Project (was Group 4 Project) and which is now compulsory for ESS students.

The emphasis on skills for an interdisciplinary subject means that students will develop many skills that may be familiar from different disciplines.

Assessment

There will continue to be two papers in ESS.

Paper 1 continues to be a case study with a resource booklet. This will be extended for HL.

Paper 2 continues to contain Section A with short answer questions and Section B with essay questions with parts a, b and c but there is differentiation between SL and HL.

Internal Assessment

The internal assessment remains an individual investigation, however, collaboration will be permitted in the collection of data.

Future Workshops and Support

Subject Specific Seminars are happening in February and March around the world. There will also be online versions of these SSSs. These focus on the differences between the old course and the new course and are designed for experienced ESS teachers.

Following these workshops at Category 1 and 2 will start to happen from about April/May 2024 following the new course guide.

The IB's teacher support material for ESS is going to be very extensive and helpful.

Here at InThinking we aim to have our site as ready as possible for March 2024 but we will then continue to develop new materials

The IB has published the Subject Brief for SL and HL
