Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding

This section contains learning activities for criterion A: Knowing and Understanding

Criterion A: Knowing and Understanding

For MYP 5, the assessment objectives for criterion A are

i. explain scientific knowledge
ii. apply scientific knowledge and understanding to solve problems set in familiar and unfamiliar
situations
iii. analyse and evaluate information to make scientifically supported judgments.

- MYP Sciences Guide (© IBO 2014)

When learning through activities that are assessed with this criterion, students will acquire scientific knowledge, and demonstrate their understanding through solving problems. At the higher levels of performance, students will transfer the knowledge they have to problems in unfamiliar contexts of increasing complexity. Students will analyse information given in various forms and they will critically evaluate the information in order to make judgements, form theories or models about natural phenomena.

Typically, when learning through criterion A activities students will be acquiring and demonstrating approaches to learning of critical-thinking and transfer skills, along with some information literacy skills.
