In this activity you will use an online simulation to explore force, acceleration and friction.

Guiding question

How does force affect the motion of masses?

Click here to open the forces and motion simulation on PhET.

Set the app up as shown.

Use the app to find:

1.The force needed to just start the crate moving (this is called the ‘static friction’)

2.The friction force when the crate is moving (this is called the ‘dynamic friction’)

3.The force that produces an acceleration of 2 m/s2

Use Newton’s Second Law to write an equation for the force, friction, mass and acceleration of the crate.

This task can be used to check for understanding / formatively assess in criterion A: Knowing and Understanding. Marking notes and a student can-do sheet can be found here.
