Grab bag: states of matter

How does energy transform matter?
This activity explores the relationship between temperature, thermal energy and states of matter.

Click here to open the forces and motion simulation on Phet.
Select the app for phase changes.
Set up the app as shown, using water molecules.
Identify the first state of matter for the water. Explain your answer with reference to the particles.
State the temperature at which you would expect the water to change to the next state.
Find this temperature.
Identify the second state of matter for the water. Explain your answer with reference to the particles.
Describe the evidence that evaporation is taking place.
Now heat again to the next state.
Explain why now the pressure begins to increase as the temperature increases, but not before.
