Dr. Luiten is an experienced educator with over 30 years of practice in both local and international schools across Japan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. He has also served on the academic team at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Australia. He is dedicated to delivering interactive, personalised, and inquiry-based lessons, which are meticulously prepared to challenge students and support them in achieving their personal goals.
He earned his Ph.D in Musicology from the University of Sydney in 2009, focusing on Bartók's final string quartet. His research primarily examined the reasons behind the significant revisions to the closing of the last movement from its initial sketches. Additionally, Dr. Luiten holds a Master’s degree in Linguistics from Macquarie University (2006) and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (English Literature), awarded with distinction from the University of Hong Kong in 1997.
Recently, he accepted the position of Director of Music at the Yew Chung Yew Wah Education Network of schools. In this role, he provides support to music educators across all 24 schools in China and Hong Kong, ensuring the maintenance of high-quality standards.
Throughout his career, Dr. Luiten has held numerous notable positions, including Curriculum Development Contributor for the IBDP Music Course, with the first assessment administered in 2022. He has also served as a Lead Educator in the Asia-Pacific region, training upcoming IB Workshop Leaders across the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP). Furthermore, he functions as a site visitor for schools completing their five-year IB reviews and actively contributes to the assessment development process within the IBDP Music framework.
His expertise spans curriculum design, teacher training, classroom management, and educational leadership. Beyond academia, he acts as a concert music critic in Hong Kong and conducts professional development workshops for educators. Additionally, Dr. Luiten manages the IBDP Music Teachers Worldwide group, which boasts over 2,000 members worldwide.
