Giovanni Palestrina was regarded as one of the most important of Italian Renaissance composers. He wrote more than 100 Masses. In the 16th century, the Council of Trent at the time of the Counter-Reformation, decreed, "Church music should not give empty pleasure to the ear, but inspire religious contemplation."
