CMM - Getting Started with Research

Research

Often neglected in a project like this, research forms an important component of the journey. Sources from understanding the editing process and recording devicutilizinglising structural features and authentic performance practices are all possible pathways in which one can better prepare for this recommended 90-hour project. This page helps with the early stages and offers some ideas about how to begin the research and ensure that it is relevant.

SAMPLE ideas

All of these ideas have been created by music teachers globally.

(scroll down to the bottom of the screen to input your ideas on RESEARCH for these sample ideas)

SAMPLE 1:

Project: Live Coding

A Live Coding event in collaboration with the Coding/Data Science Club.

Here is an explanation from IEEE Spectrum

"Live coding is a type of performance art in which the performer creates music by programming and reprogramming a synthesizer as the composition plays. The synthesizer code is typically projected onto walls or screens for the audience to inspect as they listen to the unfolding sound. Live coding events are sometimes known as AlgoRaves, and at these events, it is common to see visualizations of the evolving music projected alongside the code. Often, these visualizations are created by a second performer manipulating graphics software in tandem with the live coder".

Project: Anniversary Celebrations

Compose a piece of music for the school’s 60th anniversary celebrations at least 7 minutes long.

It could be an ensemble composition so either choral or orchestral, or both. Score it, and create a demo of the different melodic lines. Include themes that remind you of school, and the local context, but ensure that they are well woven together into a harmonious whole.

You would need to include similar songs, folk songs, nationalist songs, and other school songs to understand what themes and structures are used.

Consider your musical goals, and your inspiration – what school experiences would you use, and how would they translate to music?

Sample 3

Project: Create a short film

Collaborators: DP music student + DP film student

Individual responsibility: The DP film student would be responsible for developing the visual aspects & dialogue of the short film while the DP music student would be responsible for composing the score. Both students would need to be involved in the planning stages through to the final product (short film).

However, the film student would need to brief the music student on the narrative and artistic intention. Both students should develop a shared vision and understanding of the local/global context and overall artistic intention.

Academic integrity implications: Documenting the planning process and delegating tasks clearly would be important. Options for this could be recording the discussions/meetings and maintaining a shared planning platform.

Having students from two different disciplines would make their responsibilities clear.

Sample 4

Project: Soundscape

The student would partner with an IB/non-IB art student to create a "soundscape" for an interactive art gallery.

The music student would either compose or arrange multiple bars of music that would coincide with a particular piece of art to add an auditory component that would help express the meaning behind the artist's work.

For a final presentation, the artwork would be displayed with QR codes that would be linked to the music.

Sample 5

Project: Documentary

The student will collaborate with the Photography and Film Studies class to draft a documentary about our music program that covers the last school year.

The short documentary will focus on the challenges and triumphs of learning, making, and performing music from personal, local, and global contexts.

The students will collaborate to develop a vision and create a storyboard with a potential script. The student will also select two of the following:

  • 1. the school song,
  • 2. the fight song, or
  • 3. the alma mater.

The purpose is to create a unique combination of the two using contemporary methods and technology.

The finished product will be broadcast through the school outlets.

It is hoped that by beginning in this way, you will consider what is necessary for the initial steps.

Follow-Up

For your next class, please have a LIST of sources (between 10 - 15) that you think you require for your CMM project.

For example, if you wanted to do something similar to the Anniversary School Celebration Concert, you might need to research the following:

Other Examples of Anniversary Songs:

UWCSEA's 50th Anniversary Song – Home Away from Home

Alice Smith School 70th Anniversary Celebrations

Lianhua Primary School 75th Anniversary Song
