2. For STUDENTS
WHERE DOES THIS JOURNEY START? HOW DO I BEGIN?
It is quite common for students to be confused as they start the study of the IB DP program. Feeling a bit anxious is normal and, believe it or not, a bit of this can be healthy.
Students normally start the program by wanting to know exactly what they need to know in order to do well on the assessments. It's important to understand upfront that the program can be approached from multiple perspectives.

The IB maintains the course should be accessible to all regardless of previous music training. This has undergone some criticism when the current course was introduced, but we feel the course IS accessible to students who seriously want to know and explore music.
The course can address the needs of the serious music student, whose goal is to be accepted into a top-flight music academy or university. Likewise, the course can also cater to the interest of the student who loves music and, although not planning to make it a career, does intend to make it an important aspect of their lives.

The course intends to on the one hand further develop the skills one may already have but it is also important to offer the opportunity for students to explore and investigate music on their level.
Regardless of one's ability level, students will be challenged to investigate music that is unfamiliar to them and strive to make connections to that which is already familiar.
Before you begin the contents of this site, we need to emphasize the importance of reading through this chapter first. Here, you will find helpful tools on what to look for throughout the course, including the identification of your own musical persona. PLEASE BE SURE TO READ THROUGH THESE CHAPTERS BEFORE YOU BEGIN TO WORK ON COURSE CONTENT.
Feeling anxious and frustrated along the way is normal and you will need to look at these feelings as part of your own journal.

Regardless of your entry level remember: YOU NEED TO CRAWL BEFORE YOU CAN WALK AND YOU NEED TO WALK BEFORE YOU CAN RUN.
