4.Acing the ASSESSMENT

Assessment in Many Forms

Assessment is an important component in any course and we as educators need to create opportunities for the many facets of assessment to happen regularly. Some of the most revealing and informative observations can occur when students do not know that they are being assessed, say through informal discussions with classmates and/or with you. Gathering information about each of your students in either a formative or summative capacity can be greatly instructive and help guide your next steps as an educator.

The assessment process in the IB is more of an ongoing process than a destination. Assessment is an inclusive procedure requiring input from both the teacher AND the student before moving on to the formal assessment of an IB examiner.

Assessment can be formal utilizing written and aural examinations or performance and creating presentations. Likewise, and sometimes the most powerful kinds of assessment are those that are informal with nothing more than casual conversations.
